Marjorie Taylor Greene files motion to oust Mike Johnson as House speaker. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene has filed a motion to remove Speaker Mike Johnson from his position. Johnson has been the speaker for five months, taking over from Kevin McCarthy, who was also removed through a similar process.
The House will decide on Greene’s motion with a majority vote. However, Greene did not file the motion as urgent, so it might not be voted on right away and could be sent to a committee for further discussion.
Greene said the motion is a “warning” to prompt the House to choose a new speaker without causing chaos like when McCarthy was removed.
She hasn’t talked to former President Donald Trump about the motion. The House won’t discuss the motion until after a two-week break starting on Friday, and will reconvene on April 9.
Johnson’s focus is on governing and pushing conservative legislation. Representative Matt Gaetz, who previously forced a vote to remove McCarthy, doesn’t support removing Johnson because it might lead to a Democrat becoming the speaker.
Greene had hinted at her plans before filing the motion. She told a podcast that the decision was being made “minute-by-minute.” She also mentioned that many people were discussing the motion to remove Johnson, but didn’t give specifics on when it would happen or why.
