NCAA reveals tournament field for 2024 women’s tournament. The South Carolina Gamecocks had a great season, winning all their games in the regular season and conference tournament. Because of this, they were named the top seed in the 2024 NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship, which will take place from March 20 to April 7.
The NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Committee also gave No. 1 seeds to Iowa, Southern California, and Texas based on their performance.
The tournament will start with the First Four opening-round games on March 20-21. These games will be played on the campuses of four of the top 16 seeded teams. The first- and second-round games will be held from March 22-25 on the campuses of the top 16 seeds.
Regional play will happen in Albany, N.Y., and Portland from March 29 to April 1. Each site will host two regional semifinal games on March 29 and two on March 30. Additionally, each site will host a regional championship game on March 31 and another on April 1.
The 2024 NCAA Women’s Final Four will take place on April 5 and 7 at the Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in Cleveland.
South Carolina, being the No. 1 overall seed, leads the Albany Regional 1. They are hoping to become the 10th team in history and the fifth program to win the national championship without losing any games. The last team to do this was UConn in 2016. South Carolina also won the Southeastern Conference regular season and tournament championships in 2023-24.
Iowa, the top seed in Albany Regional 2, has been a No. 1 seed in the NCAA championship three times before, in 1988, 1992, and now in 2024. They won the Big Ten Conference Tournament championship on March 10.
Southern California, the winner of the Pac-12 Tournament championship, is the top seed in Portland Regional 3. They have previously won two championships in 1983 and 1984.
Texas, the Big 12 Conference Tournament champion, is the top seed in Portland Regional 4. They last won the national championship in 1986.
Tennessee has participated in all 42 NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championships since it began in 1982. On the other hand, California Baptist, Columbia, Presbyterian, and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi are making their first NCAA tournament appearances. Eastern Washington, Marshall, and UC Irvine are each making their second tournament appearance.
Thirty-two conferences received automatic bids for the championship, and the remaining 36 teams were selected at-large.
In the 41 years of the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship, 16 schools have won the national title. UConn leads with 11 championships, followed by Tennessee with eight. LSU is the defending national champion, having won their first national title in 2023.
